While the novel coronavirus is mainly spread by respiratory droplets, it can become airborne when tiny droplets called droplet nuclei or aerosols containing it get suspended in the air. Although research on aerosol transmission is still ongoing, the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted emerging evidence on airborne transmission in “indoor crowded poorly ventilated spaces.”
