PolitiFact
PolitiFact is a United States fact-checking site run by the Poynter Institute. It rates claims by politicians and viral posts on its Truth-O-Meter, from True to Pants on Fire.
“Walmart is “kidnapping kids” and selling them, and this can be proven by searching “girls shoes $5,000” on Walmart.com.”
PolitiFact says: There is no evidence Walmart has links to kidnappings or child sex trafficking. Walmart says the rumors are “simply untrue” and said the high prices that prompted suspicion were mistakes.
“Friendly reminder: Cigarettes are FDA approved.”
PolitiFact says: The FDA has not approved any tobacco product, cigarettes included.
“The contagiousness of the coronavirus delta variant is “valued between 5 and 9½,” and if the value is closer to 10, “within six weeks, the whole country will test positive for delta, regardless of vaccination.”
PolitiFact says: One measure rates delta’s contagiousness in the range of what the video states. But it is a theoretical measure that doesn’t take into account steps such as vaccination that reduce the risk of getting COVID-19.
“Norfolk naval base has been taken by NATO.”
“Says a U.S. Air Force-insignia plane evacuating people from Afghanistan is fake.”
PolitiFact says: There is no evidence that the plane was fake. The U.S. has flown more than 82,000 people out of Afghanistan in recent days.
“75 doctors in South Florida walked out in protest as their hospital was flooded with unvaccinated COVID-19 patients.”
PolitiFact says: The event was not a protest or a walkout. It took place around 6 a.m., before office hours, and physicians who attended either came before the start of their shifts or after.
“As the Taliban's gaining ground, Biden's team of incompetence killed the Trump-era program to oversee the evacuation of Americans from crisis zones around the world.”
“80% of women who have been jabbed have lost their children in the first trimester.”
PolitiFact says: A claim made in a viral school board meeting video appears to parrot a false claim that manipulated the findings of a preliminary study. There is no proof of that rate of miscarriages.
“Former President Donald Trump “was blocked from getting troops out of (Afghanistan) by Liz Cheney and others.”
PolitiFact says: An amendment backed by Cheney received bipartisan support and became law. It allowed troop reductions to proceed as long as reports were submitted confirming national security wasn't harmed.
“The bomb threat near the U.S. Capitol on Aug. 19 was a false flag.”
“A Milwaukee election employee even acknowledged dropping off just the margin of ballots needed for a Biden win at 3 a.m.”
“Al-Qaida is “gone” from Afghanistan.”
PolitiFact says: A U.N. report in June said that al-Qaida is present in at least 15 Afghan provinces in the range of several dozen to 500 persons.
“Says “31 U.S. troops” were “killed in Afghanistan yesterday.”
PolitiFact says: A viral post shared amid the U.S. Afghanistan withdrawal suggests 31 troops were killed there “yesterday.” The attack that killed 30 troops occurred in August 2011.
“The U.S. is “now importing 800,000 barrels of oil from Russia,” but that could have been prevented if the Keystone XL pipeline hadn’t been cancelled.”
PolitiFact says: The U.S. is importing a large amount of Russian oil today, the cancelled Keystone XL pipeline would not have prevented this.
“A photo shows two COVID-19 patients lying on the floor awaiting treatment in Florida.”
PolitiFact says: A photo on Reddit shows two sick people lying on the ground awaiting treatment for COVID-19. Louie Lopez told PolitiFact that he took the photo while awaiting Regeneron at a site in Jacksonville, Fla.
“Flights across America are backed up because airline crews are “refusing the mandated jab” and walking off boarded flights.”
PolitiFact says: Major flight cancellations from airlines have stemmed from myriad of issues, but not because of protests of vaccine mandates. Airlines that do have vaccine mandates have not reported protests from employees.
“Joe Biden and Kamala Harris “continuously questioned the vaccine during the campaign” but now “they support vaccine cards and forced vaccinations.”
PolitiFact says: Biden and Harris questioned whether Trump would roll out COVID-19 vaccines safely, not the vaccines themselves. The Biden administration supports requiring vaccinations for some people, such as members of the military.
“Joe Biden is on a two-week vacation. Kamala Harris has been nonexistent since Inauguration Day. Jen Psaki is taking a break from her duties as press secretary for one week.”
PolitiFact says: Biden and Psaki have either rescheduled or cut short planned vacations. Harris has been working regularly, with numerous public appearances.
“On whether withdrawal from Afghanistan would be chaotic”
PolitiFact says: Biden said in July that a takeover by the Taliban was not inevitable. After withdrawal, Biden said on ABC, “The idea that somehow there's a way to have gotten out without chaos ensuing, I don't know how that happens.”
