PolitiFact
PolitiFact is a United States fact-checking site run by the Poynter Institute. It rates claims by politicians and viral posts on its Truth-O-Meter, from True to Pants on Fire.
“This is what Bill Gates and George Soros want to do… secretly stick you with a chip while testing you for the coronavirus... the Dems have a bill on the House floor ready to vote on it to require this.”
“We’re down near the low end of per capita deaths ... Most places are at 60 deaths per 100,000. We're at 29.”
“A photo shows Donald Trump with “Derek Chauvin - the cop who killed George Floyd.”
“A photo shows ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin wearing a “Make Whites Great Again Hat.”
PolitiFact says: The photo is not of Chauvin. It depicts a man named Jonathan Riches, a former federal inmate.
“A photo shows Gov. Gretchen Whitmer “on Mackinaw Island today ignoring mask and social distancing rules.”
“A photo shows three men on crosses who “feel like they’re being crucified by being required to stay at home.”
“Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, “Minnesota now has the highest unemployment rate in U.S. history.”
PolitiFact says: Minnesota’s reported unemployment rate was near a record low when this Facebook post was published. There are indications the rate could climb toward the Great Depression-era national record of nearly 25%.
“California Gov. Gavin Newsom “is sending Ballots to millions of people, anyone living in the state, no matter who they are or how they got there, will get one" and the election is "Rigged.”
PolitiFact says: Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan calls for sending mail-in ballots only to active registered voters in California, not to “anyone.” Trump’s claim that voting by mail leads to fraud is misleading. Experts have found it rare.
“Nancy Pelosi said "Congress shall not vote remotely because it is not secure!" while also saying that “Americans should all vote for president by mail!”
PolitiFact says: Pelosi has said she is open to the idea, if issues can be resolved, and she backed a measure that requires the House study remote voting for its members.
“Ron Howard wrote a Facebook post about being a liberal.”
“Says Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s family spent May 20 at her second home, breaking her own stay-at-home orders.”
PolitiFact says: Whitmer spent May 20 in Midland, Mich., site of a major flood.
“The flu didn't kill any Americans this year.”
PolitiFact says: The post is wrong. While COVID-19 has made assessing flu fatalities more complicated, thousands of Americans have died from influenza during the pandemic.
“The woman in this photograph is Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, meeting with the Ku Klux Klan in 1926, Silver Lake, New Jersey.”
“Twitter is completely stifling FREE SPEECH” by adding a fact-check label to Trump’s tweet.”
“[U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb] said he would NOT vote for [Nancy Pelosi] for Speaker, and did.”
PolitiFact says: Lamb’s voting record shows that Trump’s claim is not true. He was one of 15 Democrats in Congress who did not vote for Pelosi in the January 2019 speaker election, instead voting for U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III.
“40% of the initial small business funds didn’t go to small businesses at all.”
PolitiFact says: Biden's definition of “small business” conflicts with that used by the Small Business Administration and the program that administers the loans -- and with how he used the term a moment before this claim.
“Hidden in the CARES Act was an obscure $135 billion tax break for 43,000 millionaires.”
PolitiFact says: This refers to a real provision in the CARES Act that eases restrictions passed in 2017 that limited how extensively pass-through corporations can apply business losses to the owner’s individual tax burden.
“Joe Biden tells voters he's 'going to beat Joe Biden.”
“Texas and Florida have a “balanced budget” while California is “in debt $54 billion and New York is “in debt $6.1 billion.”
PolitiFact says: Debt is not the same as a budget shortfall. All four states have debt. The amount of state budget shortfalls due to the pandemic is a moving target. States can have debt and a balanced budget.
