Washington Post

The Fact Checker is the fact-checking column of The Washington Post in the United States. It rates claims with Pinocchios.

Donald Trump, President

“After years of devastating budget cuts and a military that was totally depleted from these endless wars, we have invested over 2 trillion — trillion, that’s with a T — dollars in the most powerful fighting force, by far, on the planet Earth.”

Washington Post rated this: Three Pinocchios

Washington Post says: The president is exaggerating his “investment” in the military, especially when he suggests that he has spent more than $2 trillion on new equipment. That's the number for the total military budget

Joe Biden, former vice president

“When, I started off as a kid, a young man in high school [was], uh, dealing with the issue. I got involved — I wasn’t any great shakes — but got involved in the civil rights movement. Desegregating restaurants, that kind of thing.”

Washington Post rated this: Two Pinocchios

Washington Post says: We can identify one incident involving Biden that can possibly be deemed an effort at desegregating a restaurant. Biden’s use of plural —“restaurants” — cannot be confirmed.

Joe Biden, former vice president

“If we shut it down a month earlier, we’d have probably another 45,000 to 60,000 people be alive instead of dead because he didn’t listen to — and I’m going to say something outrageous. He did not listen to guys like me back in January saying we have a problem, a pandemic is on the way.”

Washington Post rated this: Two Pinocchios

Washington Post says: Biden leaves the impression he had offered more specific plans to combat the virus. He did not say back in January that it was a pandemic, only that it was a possibility, and he did not advocate social distancing.

Donald Trump, President

“My Admin has done more for the Black Community than any President since Abraham Lincoln. Passed Opportunity Zones with @SenatorTimScott, guaranteed funding for HBCU’s, School Choice, passed Criminal Justice Reform, lowest Black unemployment, poverty, and crime rates in history.”

Washington Post rated this: Four Pinocchios

Washington Post says: Historians universally out Lyndon B. Johnson at the top of the list, after Lincoln, and Trump far below.

Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader

“They claim pandemics only happen once every hundred years but what if that’s no longer true? We want to be early, ready for the next one, because clearly the Obama administration did not leave to this administration any kind of game plan for something like this.”

Washington Post rated this: Three Pinocchios

Washington Post says: McConnell is wrong to say the Obama administration left “no game plan” to deal with a pandemic; the Obama team crafted a detailed document setting forth questions and policies that should be considered.

Donald Trump, President

“It [AIDS] was a death certificate. And then, all of a sudden, they came up with some kind of — and now we have — we will be AIDS-free within eight years. We started 10 years. Should have started in the previous administration. They did nothing.”

Washington Post rated this: False

Washington Post says: Trump's plans for fighting AIDS was built on Obama's plans, though with a more ambitious goal; both presidents spent about the same amount of money each year.

Donald Trump, President

“The Postal Service is a joke because they’re handing out packages for Amazon and other Internet companies. And every time they bring a package, they lose money on it.”

Washington Post rated this: Four Pinocchios

Washington Post says: USPS says it is making money, as required by law. Treasury cannot show USPS is actually losing money on its contract with Amazon, as Trump claims. It can assert only that USPS does not know whether it makes a profit.

Donald Trump, President

“By the way, I did that very early, while Nancy Pelosi was trying to have, in San Francisco, parties in Chinatown. Because they — she thought it would be great. She wanted to show that this thing doesn’t exist.”

Washington Post rated this: Four Pinocchios

Washington Post says: Trump says Pelosi urged street fairs and parades, but that’s not true. She advocated patronage of Chinese businesses. She was not trying to show the virus did not exist.
