Mr Bandt's claim is overstated. Experts told Fact Check there were two key measures of rents: "asking rents" and the rent component within the consumer price index (CPI) published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Asking rents refers to changes in advertised rents for new leases, while the CPI measures changes in rents for all housing stock.
