PolitiFact is a United States fact-checking site run by the Poynter Institute. It rates claims by politicians and viral posts on its Truth-O-Meter, from True to Pants on Fire.
“Photo shows Tom Hanks after “wife Rita exposed his condition after he was spotted in a bad state. Tom will spend the remainder of his life in and out of hospitals.”
“Says Donald Trump signed the Insurrection Act and “still is president.”
PolitiFact says: There’s no evidence that Trump invoked the law during his final days in office. He is not president anymore.
“Says Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried “spent millions of dollars to put her face on every gas pump across this state.”
PolitiFact says: The stickers cost about $5,000, not "millions of dollars."
“There is a place in the U.S. where murder is legal.”
PolitiFact says: Murder is not legal anywhere in the United States. A provision in the Sixth Amendment might make prosecuting felonies committed within the Idaho portion of Yellowstone National Park more complicated.
“U.S. military arrests Dr. Deborah Birx.”
“Congress created “a generous mortgage relief program” for veterans.”
PolitiFact says: There is no evidence that Congress established a program that would substantially reduce veterans’ mortgage payments. Veterans are advised to be wary of offers to refinance VA home loans that seem too good to be true.
“The CDC lowered the PCR threshold while no longer recording asymptomatic cases...but only for the vaccinated.”
PolitiFact says: While it’s true the CDC are no longer officially scrutinizing asymptomatic breakthrough infections, the agency has not “lowered” the general cycle threshold for determining COVID-19.
“The New York Times published an old stock photo of a young girl and claimed Israeli forces killed her during its recent war with Hamas.”
“An email from Dr. Anthony Fauci shows "everyone was lied to" about wearing masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”
PolitiFact says: A social media post using old Fauci email falsely claims that Fauci ‘lied’ about mask wearing
“Emails show "Fauci's fellow scientist could tell early on that the (coronavirus) looked manufactured.”
PolitiFact says: One credible researcher noted the possibility of an engineered virus, but said more work was needed.
“Not one word” from Joe Biden and Kamala Harris honoring service members for Memorial Day.”
“The filibuster, if it does not get reformed, still means that maybe 30% of the population potentially controls the majority of Senate seats.”
PolitiFact says: That's all it would take to successfully wield the filibuster, but given today's partisan patterns in the states, it's not enough to assemble a 51-seat majority.
“Two members of the Senate," Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, "voted more with my Republican friends" than with the president from their own party.”
PolitiFact says: Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema support the continued use of the Senate’s filibuster rule, which imperils key elements of Biden’s agenda. But on actual votes, both Manchin and Sinema backed Biden 100% of the time.
“Absent from the news — Dominion lost their lawsuits against Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell.”
PolitiFact says: The two defamation lawsuits filed by Dominion Voting Systems, a company targeted with baseless claims about rigging the 2020 presidential election, are still active.
“Says ATF chief nominee David Chipman was part of the 1993 assault on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas.”
PolitiFact says: The man in the photo is an FBI sharpshooter. Chipman was an ATF agent and was sent to Waco until May 2, 1993, two weeks after the assault and fire.
“The one good thing about the antibodies if you’ve had it, is it actually is even better than the vaccine, and here's why. With the vaccine you can still transmit, with the antibodies you can't transmit.”
PolitiFact says: There is no evidence in the available scientific research of Covid-19 or the authorized vaccines to support this claim.
“An Instagram post says that a photo shows Michelle Obama as a man prior to marrying Barack Obama.”
PolitiFact says: The image in the post has been ridiculously altered. Michelle Obama did not change her gender prior to marrying Barack Obama, and there are many photos of her that prove this. The two were married on Oct. 3, 1992.
